Context (Analysis)
On 15 July 2021, Dr Paola Ricciardi and Dr Flavia Fiorillo of the Fitzwilliam Museum undertook fibre optics reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) analysis on this textile to determine the colour pigments, etc. The results are in the report (see Doc.507) and reveal:
Red background - insect-based dye (possibly cochineal prepared with a tin mordant), wool
Blue - indigo, wool
Green - indigo mixture, wool
Brown - unidentified colourant, linen or similar plant-based fibre
White - unidentified colourant, wool
Black - unidentified colourant, wool
